Sometimes humans are squirrels, and sometimes squirrels areā€¦dragons? (sab)

The “squirrel” raises a questioning eyebrow, and Bane explains that the lightning bolt, transformation into a non-threatening furry animal, declaration of war, and favoring of a cavern with an underwater entrance all led him to this hopefully accurate conclusion.

“Interesting, and perceptive,” he says. “But in regards to the attempts on your and your companion’s life, you should not feel singled-out, not yet. The action seemed to be impetuous, and ill-organized. I have no doubt that the assassins saw Moonshadow as easy sport, not having any clue that this would draw both your and my ire. If they had, surely they would have been more aggressive, more ready. It could easily have been a trap, used to turn your concern against you.

“No, these are mere eyes and ears, seeking to inform this Grandfather that you speak of what dangers await or approach. So I will watch, and wait, and let him worry about the loss of these three. When we are both ready, I shall act, and as you say, lop the head from the viper with a single organized sweep.

“It is imperative that no news reach Grandfather, and that he has no reason to suspect that the loss of these vermin was but an isolated incident. I hope that my rash actions have not tipped our hand too soon. I urge that you remain hidden, and do not interfere with the scouts. Information shall be our strongest weapon.

“A cavern, protected by water? An interesting proposition. I shall measure your valor, and the treasure you will undoubtably offer, in the days to come, human. And do not seek to scry for me — I do not wish your sensor to be detected by our enemy. I will contact you when the time is ripe.”

The squirrel leaps into the air, the granite beneath its feet crumbling into powder, its shape twisting and growing as it moves. For a brief moment, you see its true form: a vast dragon, bronze as you suspected, tips and tail and face verdigris with age. Then it is gone, and only the wind of its passing remains.
