City of Miracles

September 22nd, 2004

A bard’s tale heard by the adventurers in a reputable inn during the weeks in which they were searching Greyhawk for a master weaponsmith. They received a few shy glances during its telling… (sab)

It is said that in the City of Miracles, the streets are paved in leaves of platinum and gold, and no one dies before their time.

It is said that in the City of Miracles, the very walls of the temple can speak to the hearts of men.

It is said that in the City of Miracles, there stands a giant statue in the center of town who sleeps, patiently waiting to defend the citizens in time of need.

It is said that in the City of Miracles, the crops are untouched by the coldest snows and harshest rays of summer and stay instead forever fertile and lush in eternal Spring, watched and protected by a being that is pure light and shows itself to no man.

It is said that in the City of Miracles, there stands a towering Tree which glimmers with a brilliant luminosity in daytime and glows with a soft radiance of its own at night.

It is said that in the City of Miracles, that when the wind blows hard through the arms of the Tree the leaves make a sound like the roaring of a great Dragon, and shine like His scales.

And if there be a few malcontents who doubt these words and speak of a strange pressure to flee this peace and tranquility, who shall believe? And if on quiet nights, visitors claim to hear the beating of a mighty Hammer, striking hard and sharp the blows of Doom, who shall listen to their words? And if there is at times an odd disturbance in the nearby lake that speaks of a vast presence hidden far beneath its placid surface, who shall fear?

For they who live in the City of Miracles, they know.
